Why Your Engineering Resume Is Being Rejected (And How to Fix It)
October 7, 2026
Michael Daleo
If you are sending out dozens of applications to companies like NASA or SpaceX but hearing nothing back, your resume is likely failing the 6-second test. Recruiters don't read resumes; they scan them for specific signals. If those signals are buried in paragraphs or irrelevant coursework, you will be filtered out before a human ever looks at your profile. The biggest mistake I see as an aerospace engineer is treating a resume like a biography. It shouldn't list every project you've ever touched; it should showcase the specific engineering problems you have solved. First, stop focusing on your GPA. Unless you are applying for a highly academic research position, recruiters care about your technical skills and how you apply them. Did you use CAD to solve a structural failure? Did you code a script to automate data analysis? Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to frame your projects. For example, instead of saying 'Worked on a rocket project,' write 'Optimized fuel flow efficiency by 15% using MATLAB, reducing launch weight by 2kg.' Quantifiable data catches eyes. Second, stop using generic templates. Engineering resumes need to be ATS-friendly. Use a clean, single-column layout without complex graphics that confuse scanning software. Finally, mirror the keywords from the job description. If they ask for 'FEA analysis,' ensure that exact phrase appears under your technical skills or project descriptions. If you don't use their language, you don't exist to their system. Crafting a resume that actually converts requires a strategy, not just a list of classes. This is exactly what we teach in FormAWin. If you are ready to stop guessing and start getting interviews with top firms, it is time to look at your application strategy differently.
