Why Your Personal Projects Matter More Than Your GPA

Let's be honest: a 4.0 GPA is great, but it won't get you a job at NASA or SpaceX on its own. When I was studying to become an aerospace engineer, I watched brilliant students with perfect grades get ghosted by top-tier companies, while students with a 3.2 and a killer portfolio landed the offers. Why? Because a GPA only proves you can take a test. Personal projects prove you can actually engineer. Recruiters at companies like Lockheed Martin and Google aren't looking for professional students. They want problem-solvers who can handle real-world ambiguity. Here is how you build projects that actually get you hired: **1. Stop Building Class Assignments** A basic Arduino weather station is okay for sophomore year, but it won't stand out. Build something tied to your specific industry goals. If you want to work in propulsion, design and test a small rocket nozzle. If you're into software, write a flight dynamics simulation from scratch. **2. Embrace the Messy Middle** Engineering is rarely clean. Your project will fail, parts will break, and code will crash. Document this process. Keep a build log or a repository showing your iterations and how you troubleshot problems. Recruiters care more about how you recover from failure than a flawless final product. **3. Make it Tangible** If a recruiter can’t see it or interact with it, it doesn't exist. Create a 2-minute video demo of your project working. Write a clear README explaining the math, the physics, and the tools you used. When you apply, link this directly at the top of your resume. A high GPA gets you past the initial automated filter, but your personal projects are what make a hiring manager say, 'We need to interview this person.' This is what we teach in FormAWin.
