The 6-Second Resume Test: Why Your Engineering Application Gets Rejected

October 3, 2026
Michael Daleo
If you are sending out dozens of applications to companies like NASA or SpaceX and hearing nothing but silence, the problem likely isn't your talent—it is your resume layout. Recruiters at top-tier aerospace firms operate on a tight timeline. They perform a 'six-second scan' to identify keywords and tangible impact before moving to the next candidate. If your resume is a wall of text or lacks clear, quantifiable achievements, you are likely hitting the trash bin before anyone even sees your GPA. First, stop listing your daily tasks. Instead of saying 'Responsible for maintaining lab equipment,' change it to 'Optimized 3D printing workflows, reducing material waste by 15%.' Quantifiable results demonstrate engineering maturity and provide a clear picture of the value you bring to a project. Second, categorize your experience by impact, not just chronology. Ensure your most relevant projects—those that highlight CAD proficiency, simulation software, or hardware prototyping—are located in the top third of the page. Use a clean, single-column format that is easily parsed by Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). If a computer can't read it, a recruiter won't either. Finally, align your skills section with the job description. Do not list every software you have ever touched; highlight the specific tools listed in the job post. If the role requires SolidWorks and FEA analysis, those terms should be bold or clearly listed in your skills section, not buried in a paragraph. Remember, your resume is a marketing document, not a biography. It should sell your ability to solve engineering problems, not just document your history. If you are struggling to quantify your impact or need a framework to turn your school projects into high-value professional assets, this is exactly what we teach in FormAWin. We help engineers turn their experience into offer letters.
